For many people, the idea of starting therapy feels uncertain. Not because they are against it, but because they do not know what to expect.
The first session is not about judgment or diagnosis. It is about understanding.
In most cases, your therapist will start by asking simple questions about what brought you in. This may include how you have been feeling recently, what challenges you are facing, and what you hope to get from support.
You are not expected to share everything immediately. Therapy is not an interview, and there is no pressure to open up faster than you are comfortable with.
The first session is more about building context and comfort. Think of it as setting the foundation for future conversations.
What surprises many people is how normal the conversation feels. It is often more like a guided discussion than something clinical or intimidating.
By the end of the first session, the goal is not to “fix” anything. The goal is to begin understanding your situation more clearly.
